Road Trip Packing List!
June 3rd, 2009
I put together a preliminary packing list a few weeks ago. It’s time to revisit it, I think, but for the sake of adding some visual flair to the site, here’s this:

My hand, posing with my handwritten packing list.
Y’know, since creating this list, it’s occurred to me that it’d be real romantic and cool-like to bring as little as possible. I’m not sure what’s going to win out. I got a few weeks still. Maybe also note that I’m mostly camping on this trip, and hiking. Here’s what the above says (with cross-outs where I’ve altered plan).

Can’t you combine the hatchet & Mallet?
Can’t the daypack and overnight pack be the same? Isn’t the fanny pack an integral part of the main backpack?
Rope or parachute cord? What will you be hauling?
Utensils? Bring a titanium spork and use the knife. What more do you need?
If your hike boots are adequate, you don’t need hike shoes. The boots must be comfortable, obviating the need for flip flops, too. (Isn’t the preferred adjective “hiking?”) I’ll let you decide whether the hiking boots can double as dress shoes – functionality should win out over “dress” conventions. (When I’m emperor …)
Reduce the 7x sox to 4x sox. Why would you need so many? Rinse and hang!
Cut shirts and underwear by 25%.
Reduce caps by 1/3.
Reduce towels by 1/3.
What kind of knife? Just one? Kbar (large fixed blade) plus a multi-tool, at least (in my book).
Your left hand looks exactly like mine. It’s uncanny.
Flip flops for the shower. Flip flops are essential. Plus, they don’t take up much space.
710: Are you considering “flip flops for the shower” as different than just plain “flip flops”?
Telk: The last couple times I went camping I forgot to bring any usual silverware and ate dinner using just a spatula and pocket knife. Don’t need no spork. But I’m hoping to bring a fork and spoon regardless. I mean, I’m *car camping*.
As long as you have at least one fire using a buffalo patty, I will concede a fork and spoon. I had a pocketknife from Yellowstone that contained both a spoon and fork. I miss that knife. I presumed the girly footwear would be used “in shower,” but there are plenty of rivers and going European on vacation would be interesing.
Car camping? Are you not driving a truck?
Yikes, your list is sooooooo long compared to what I hope ours will be. Ours *has* to be much shorter because our style of traveling will be different, but oy.
LOL. I think it’d be cool to do the exact opposite, i.e., only take what’ll fit in one good-sized backpack. Oh well. I got the truck, may as well make use of the truck I figure.
what about a gps of some sort? i know its not the most adventurous thing and youre taking a road atlas, but they do have gps devices that have hiking trails in them that are relatively cheap. this could be a nice feature to notice if you go right, theres a creek.
I have a *sort of* GPS, but it was relatively cheap three years ago, so it’s ultimately not much fun. I haven’t figured out what I’d actually do with a GPS if I had one — I’m guessing I’ll be able to recognize creeks on sight, for instance ;). OTOH, I figure that if I realize at Yosemite that I wished I had one, I can pick one up in Reno-Tahoe before heading up to Lassen.
